I have an odd question for you. Your the first forum I've found so far that has a doctor that'll answer questions. I was born with a VSD, it finally healed somewhere in the past 3 years, but now my cardiologiest says I have a leak in my aorta valve. He says it isn't serious, but I would think that it would be. I also have a ventral hernia and was wondering if the leak would effect the hernia, I occasionally get shortness of breath, lightheadedness, dizziness, sharp pains in my chest around my heart, and was never really sure if any of those had to do with the hernia or leak. I can't find a surgeon in my area that takes my insurence, and wasn't sure if the hernia would worsen my leak. Any ideas?
Sorry about replying so late. Have been quite busy.
A leak in the aortic valve means that part of the blood pumped through the aorta might regurge (go downwards back to the heart).
The severity of this case depends on the size of the leak. If it's large, a lot of blood would go back to the left ventricle causing extra effort exerted on it, leading finally to heart failure. If the leak is small enough, it might not cause prominent problems.
As to the hernia, it means protrusion of an organ or tissue out of its normal covering sheath. I'm not sure if you mean a hernia in the heart or the abdomen by "ventral hernia". In case of a heart hernia, it's caused by extra pressure inside of the heart, predictable by the VSD (you have had). A large leak in the aorta might aggravates a heart hernia because - as I've mentioned - it causes more pressure in the cavity.
If you trust your cardiologist, listen to what he says. The leak you have might be small as he has said. If not, you may want to check at another cardiologist.
