Possibility of hepatitis
Permalink Closed

Dear doctor Haisook,

My husband was sick for a weekend with severe diarrhea, fever, lack of apettite and his urine were kinda reddish in color. The third day he was completely recovered. I never thought much of it until i heard in the television abouth hepatitis and that it can cause diarrhea and red urine. Then i remembered my husbnd's condition and i freaked because some months before that incident we were seperated for some time and we were heading for divorce. During that time i got into a new relationship whih didnt last very long since i returned to my husband because we thought we should give our marriage a chance. And know i panicked because i thought that i could have contracted hepatitis from my new relationship and gave it to my husband. Tje next day i had blood exams without saying anyting to him and the reaults were hiv negative, hcv negative, Hsbag negative. I have two questions :

1. Do my husband's symptoms indicate any kind of form of hepatitis? Is there any other disease that can cause similar symptoms? If yes, which?

2. From my lab exams can i say that i didnt gave my husband any disease or i should have more exams particularly regarding hepatitis B ? I have read that Hbsag only indicates that i dont have hepatitis NOW not that i NEVER had right? So that means that i could have contracted the hepatitis B virus, gave it to my husband and then my body cleared the virus as it happens in most of the cases? Please what is your professional opinion!!! Any answer would be enormously apprieciated.

FRIDA,

First, you need to relax. Everything's gonna be fine. Second, I'm not a professional doctor. I'm just a medical student, but I'll try to help as much as I can.

1. According to Wikipedia, the symptoms of hepatitis include fatigue, malaise, joint aches, abdominal pain, vomiting 2-3 times per day for the first 5 days, loss of appetite, dark urine, fever, hepatomegaly (enlarged liver) and jaundice (icterus). However, a lot - or even most - of diseases that have a connection with the intestine show such symptoms as well.

2. This is not accurately correct. I think your husband is the one who needs to get checked in the lab. But first, visit your doctor, and tell him about your thoughts. He's going to point out the suitable lab tests.

Hope this helps.
