Migraines?
Permalink Closed

I am a 20 year old female with no previous health problems. I have had pain/aches in my elbow and hand for several years if I set them down on a surface for too long, but I am not sure if this is related. I have been having interesting problems for about a month now. Perhaps four weeks ago, my left arm went gradually numb, with the numbness spreading from my little finger, across my hand, and then up to my elbow. Sensation returned, I thought nothing of it other than maybe I had slept on it oddly (this was in the morning). A week later the same thing happened, only the numbness continued spreading all the way up my face to just below my left eye. Oddly, the left side of my tongue was also numb. I got very worried, but sensation returned. I called my mother, and she suggested if it happened again I should go see someone.

Another week later, the left side of my face lost sensation at work. It did not go totally numb, but was accompanied by a sense of vertigo. I went in to our Urgent Care center that day, and after a few questions and various tests of the strength of my hands, the doctor suggested I was experiencing migraines. I had a CT scan done to make sure nothing very abnormal was going on (tumor, stroke, etc) and it turned up normal.

Since then, I have experienced partial sensation loss several times, always accompanied with a sense of restlessness. Walking around seems to help. I have also experienced a tingling feeling all over my left side, usually after I eat. I have had heaches, but not of what I would consider migraine proportions.

Two nights ago I woke up with a distinct feeling of wrongness, and restlessness. Every time I would attempt to sleep I would start awake, not feeling right. Eventually I fell asleep.

This same thing happened last night. I woke up with a distinct feeling of wrongness, and wrote down exactly what I was feeling. Parial loss of sensation in my left side. I can feel pressure, but light brushing of the fingers that is felt on my right side was not felt on my left side. I realized I could not feel my heart beat vibrating the left side of my chest as I normally can (I kept checking my pulse and wondering why, until I realized this). I felt as though it took slightly more work to breath. My tongue felt odd in my mouth, possibly having lost some sensation on its left side? My left side limbs felt oddly heavy, and it took more effort to move them.

Does this sound as though it could be related to migraines? I don't want to see another doctor if this is nothing, but if these symptoms sound like something else I will go some place other than the Urgent Care center.

Hi Liun ,

Yes, you definitely should go to a neurologist, and tell him about your thoughts. I don't think Migraines could cause all of these symptoms. It's great that you're that specific and know exactly what's bothering you. This will help very much.

Good Luck.
