What is the difference between foraminal injecting and epidural streroid injecting?
I had (R) C4-5/ C 5-6....with an order that simply stated, extra-foraminal cortisone injections with steroids - Neurolept. I have gained nil relief with negative result 3 weeks later. What do they target with foraminal shots? What type of nerve.
I have bad radiating nerve pain down my arm with an increase of pins/needles to thumb/index/& next finger.
The pain you are feeling is due to compression of roots in their foramina. This is due to the presence of edema inbetween. The cortisone and steroids you're being treated with is to relief this compression and render the roots free by decreasing edema.
So the problem is in the ROOTS themselves which are compressed. If the lesion is in the main nerves (radial, medial or ulnar), the pain will be felt distally only (i.e. in the hand).
Actually, palmer, glucocorticoids (like cortisone) promote Fat breakdown so they might cause weight loss.
EDIT: you're partially right, palmer. While glucocorticoids initially break fat down, there is a process of fat redistribution that occurs on chronic consumption of the drug. Fat accumulates in the face (moon face), back of neck (buffalo hump), and belly. It's called then Cushing syndrome.
